A Little Bit of History
Scouting is the largest co-educational youth organisation in the world with over 28 million members world-wide. Started by Lord Baden Powell in 1907 it now operates in all but a few countries around the globe, and exists to contribute to the development of young people by helping them grow up to be self-relient, responsible and caring citizens. Scouting is open to those of all faiths and offers equal opportunities to all young people in the community, regardless of their social, religious or ethnic background.
1st Elm Park Scout Group first opened its doors to the public over 70 years ago, in 1936, and together with other Scout Groups has had its share of rise and fall in numbers. However, with a new determined Leadership team in charge, the new Scouting programme firmly in place and helped by a District that has vision, we are all set to continue for the next 70 years.
2007 was the Scouting Centenary year and we joined in with the celebrations along with Scout Groups around the world. A year of celebrating Scouting while at the same time of course, continuing and extending our own programmes.
Two years further on and we're still enjoying the adventure - with new ideas and events happening all the time, while still enjoying our old favourites, if you've ever wondered what Scouting is all about then come along and see for yourself. Tthere isn't a better time to join the movement.
